A married pair of archaeologists ran a dig here in the early seventies. The first thing they noticed was what happened to the people on their own team.

In the early 1970s a husband and wife, both archaeologists, ran a dig on Grand Island in the Niagara River through the university at Buffalo.

The first thing they reported had nothing to do with what came out of the ground. It was the atmosphere among the team. People who were normally good friends turned on each other, made poor decisions and behaved unlike themselves.

That is an unusual thing for professionals to write down about their own excavation, and it is why this account is worth keeping. Archaeologists are trained observers who record conditions carefully, and putting a note about the team's state into the account of a dig is a deliberate act.

Grand Island was Seneca land, ceded under pressure in 1815, and the island holds burials.

Much of it is now residential and state park. The river around it is fast and cold.
