Fort Wadsworth stands on Staten Island beneath the Verrazzano Narrows bridge, and it is among the longest continuously garrisoned military sites in the United States, with fortifications here since the Dutch.

The reports are unusual. Visitors describe a soldier who passes through walls and through parked cars, and several describe the experience playing tricks on their vision rather than presenting a clear figure.

The strangest accounts involve people blacking out and coming back with what they describe as flashbacks. One woman reported finding herself seeing through the eyes of a nurse with black curly hair, in a room full of wounded and dying men, and looking out of a window to see more of them outside.

The fort served through the Civil War and both world wars, and it did function as a hospital.
