Isaac Buckhout shot his wife and two dinner guests, then walked fifteen miles to Tarrytown and sat in a pub until the police came for him.

Buckhout Road runs through woods on the border between White Plains and New Castle in Westchester County, New York, and the road has been there since the earliest days of the country, back to the 1600s.

It takes its name from Isaac Buckhout, a man of some standing in the area. He came to believe that his wife was having an affair with a friend of his. He invited the friend and the friend's son to dinner, and during the evening he took a shotgun and killed both of them, and then his wife.

What he did afterwards is the detail that has kept the case in local memory. He walked between twelve and fifteen miles to Tarrytown, went into a pub, and sat there. The police picked him up a few hours later.

The road has collected a great many other stories over the years, most of them attached to houses along it and none of them documented. The Buckhout killings are a matter of record, and the road has carried his name ever since.
