In the 1800s a young couple were driving their buggy home through Mudlick Hollow in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, on the day of their wedding.

A small animal ran out of the woods. The horses shied, and the buggy went off the road and into the creek.

A horse drawn buggy on a narrow hollow road was a far more dangerous thing than modern readers assume. Horses spook, the vehicle has no brakes worth the name, and a creek bank does the rest. Accidents of exactly this kind fill nineteenth century county newspapers.

That this one happened to a couple on their wedding day is what kept it. Nothing else about them survives, which is the usual trade a legend makes.
