Long Island spent the entire Revolution under British occupation. After the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776 the island was held by the Crown until the end of the war, and the families living there dealt with soldiers, foraging parties and informers for seven years. An Englishman at the door in 1778 was not a neutral event.
