This is not a ghost stop, but a place you need to know in order to understand Greenwich Village. On the night of 28 June 1969 the riots broke out here at the Stonewall Inn, and it is generally counted as the starting point of the modern struggle for gay rights. In 2016 the site became the first national monument in the United States dedicated to LGBTQ history.

The Village's identity cannot be separated from that history, nor from the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, when the neighbourhood lost thousands of residents. It lies like a silent shadow over the area. Many of the ghost stories told here between 1985 and 1995 have their real basis in something sadder than the supernatural: an entire generation that died far too soon. Stop a while by the rainbow-coloured windows and think of all the names this place carries.
