Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York State was laid out in 1849 and is closely tied to Washington Irving, the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, who is himself buried here. Among those interred are Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler and Samuel Gompers, and the cemetery holds around 47,000 graves across forty hectares. It adjoins the old Dutch burying ground that features in Irving's story, and the folklore of the headless horseman drives its reputation.
