In the fairy-tale mansion on Bolshaya Yakimanka, merchant Igumnov's unfaithful mistress is said to have been walled up alive – her white figure still glimpsed at the windows.

The turreted brick mansion in Russian Revival style was built in the 1890s for the wealthy merchant Nikolai Igumnov. According to Moscow's most persistent legend, he had his young mistress walled up alive after catching her with another man, and a weeping woman in white has been reported in the house ever since. The architect Nikolai Pozdeyev, driven to his death after Igumnov allegedly refused to pay him, is also said to linger outside his final creation, asking passers-by what they think of the house. Today the building is the residence of the French ambassador and opens to visitors only a few days a year.
