The witch Sydonia von Borck, beheaded in 1620, is said to have cursed the entire Pomeranian ducal line – and to walk the castle halls still.

The beautiful noblewoman Sydonia von Borck was loved by Duke Ernst Ludwig, but the court blocked their marriage. Legend holds that the spurned Sydonia cursed the whole House of Griffin and foretold the dynasty's extinction – which indeed came to pass. In 1620 she was condemned for witchcraft, beheaded and burned by the Mill Gate in Szczecin. Today the castle houses a 'witch's cell' devoted to her memory, and visitors tell of a female figure gliding through the Renaissance galleries at night, still burning with rage at her fate.
