The Knight in Flames – Commander von Schlieben, who broke his monastic vows – is said to appear in a fiery glow at the bedside, but only to men.

The Hospitaller castle of Łagów, on a narrow isthmus between two lakes, is haunted by the 'Knight in Flames'. He is said to be Andreas von Schlieben, the 16th-century commander who became the first Hospitaller permitted by the order to marry, only to be murdered in 1571 – and condemned to burn eternally for his broken vows. In 1820 the Prussian official von Harlem awoke to find a knight standing in a red fiery glow beside his bed; in his report the next day he recognised the figure from von Schlieben's tombstone in the nearby church. The apparition is said to show itself only in spring and summer – and only to men; a student reportedly met it during a storm as late as 1967.
