Old South Pittsburg Hospital in South Pittsburg, Tennessee was founded in 1959 by four doctors and was originally named South Pittsburg Municipal Hospital. The building of just over 6,000 square metres was erected to meet the medical needs of a growing community, and closed in 1998.

Today the hospital is held by many to be the most haunted place in Tennessee. Its lore includes children's screams, full-body apparitions, disembodied voices and shadow people, among much else of a supernatural kind.

Visitors and investigators report a range of phenomena: shadow figures, disembodied voices and objects moving by themselves; lights flickering in empty rooms, doors opening and closing, and medical equipment switching on for no reason; along with audible sounds, EVP recordings (voices in tape hiss), orbs and direct communication with spirits through so-called spirit boxes.

Many believe the activity stems from the injuries, illnesses and deaths that took place while the hospital was in operation. The building also stands on land that once belonged to the Chiaha people, and during the Civil War both Union soldiers and members of the indigenous population were killed here.

The building has been bought by a paranormal investigator and is now run as the Old South Pittsburg Hospital Paranormal Research Center, with regular investigations and tours, and has featured in television programmes such as Destination Fear and Kindred Spirits.
