Alberton was built around 1863 and for over a century was home to the Kerr Taylors, one of Auckland's leading society families, famed for their balls and garden parties. Since the house passed to Heritage New Zealand in 1972, visitors have repeatedly reported women in Victorian dress, mostly on the upper floor where the bedrooms lay. One male visitor came downstairs asking who the woman in old-fashioned clothing upstairs was — he had been alone in the house. A stressed bride even claimed she was chased out of the guest room by the Kerr Taylor sisters on her own wedding day.
