A face emerged in the bronze knee of La Giganta — and the artist refused to erase the ghost from his own sculpture.

The museum occupies the seventeenth-century Conceptionist convent of Santa Inés, where thirty-three enclosed nuns lived, one for each year of Christ's life. In the middle of the cloister stands José Luis Cuevas's eight-metre bronze La Giganta. By the artist's own account, one early morning while the figure had been raised only to the waist, the workmen found a face in its right knee. Cuevas ran his hand over the relief and became convinced that a ghost from the convent had impressed itself into the metal. When someone suggested grinding it away he flatly refused — the face is still there. Guards also describe footsteps in the empty arcade and doors slamming along the old cell corridors.
