The alley takes its name from a colonial legend about a Spanish couple whose marriage withered in silence because no child came. In desperation the wife listened to her servant and sought out a witch in the neighbourhood. The child that followed was, the story says, not her husband's, and it was born misshapen with the features of a toad — hence the alley of the toad. What makes the place uneasy is less the tale than what is said to linger: those who walk the passage between José María Marroquí and Luis Moya describe a strange damp in the air, as though the stones were sweating memory, and a faint croaking that echoes between the walls with no animal in sight. The sound is said to follow you a block further before it stops.
