A night watchman is heard whistling in the alley — those who answer him are said never to reach home, and the moneylender Julio died here.

The narrow alley between Campana and Río Mixcoac streets in the old quarter of Mixcoac is barely wide enough for a car. It was once a dark track thick with vegetation and almost unlit, and three legends grew out of that darkness. The most widespread concerns a night watchman heard in the alley after dusk: whoever stops and speaks with him is said to come to a bad end. The second belongs to the moneylender Julio, found dead in the passage one morning — neighbours said the Devil had collected him as payment for what he had taken from his debtors. The third tells of a peculiar shadow behind the tree, and of the Devil appearing to anyone who dares to challenge him.
