The Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts is the scene of one of the most talked-about unsolved murder cases in the United States. On 4 August 1892 Andrew and Abby Borden were killed in their own home, hacked to death with an axe. Abby was struck nineteen times, Andrew eleven.

Andrew's daughter Lizzie Borden was charged with the murders but acquitted in 1893 by an all-male jury. Who actually committed the killings has never been established, and the case has fascinated and horrified generations since.

The house operates today as a bed and breakfast and museum, and is called by many the most haunted in America. Guests and staff describe whispers, shadow figures and footsteps in empty rooms. Among the reports are ghost cats, rocking chairs that rock on their own, and Lizzie herself, said to press down on the throats of guests who sleep in her bed.

Breakfast, moreover, mirrors what the Borden family ate on that fateful morning. The house is open daily from ten in the morning until midnight, with historical tours, ghost tours and overnight ghost hunts.
