In seventeenth-century Rome, Costanza Conti de Cupis was known as the woman with the beautiful hand: her hands were praised in verse and cast in plaster by sculptors. A fortune-teller is said to have warned her that this very beauty would be her death. Soon afterwards she scratched herself on a needle, the wound became infected, gangrene set in and the arm was amputated — Costanza died of the operation. Ever since, legend holds that a pale, armless hand appears inside the first-floor windows of her family's palace on Piazza Navona, but only on nights when the moon is full. The last reported sighting dates from the 1920s, when tenants are said to have left those particular rooms early.
