Two carbonari walk the wall with their heads under their arms: Angelo Targhini and Leonida Montanari, beheaded without confession.

The ground inside the leaning wall was called Campo Scellerato, the wicked field. Here were buried those the Church refused consecrated ground: prostitutes, suicides, the excommunicated. On 23 November 1825 the carbonari Angelo Targhini and Leonida Montanari were led to the scaffold on Piazza del Popolo, executed by Mastro Titta and denied both confession and Christian burial — they were laid in the wicked field. Legend says that ever since they walk along the Muro Torto with their heads under their arms, and that at dusk they join a silent procession of all the others who lie there nameless. People on the footpath report muttering voices inside the wall and lamps that go out.
