In 1751 Luigi Vanvitelli was commissioned to build the Bourbon answer to Versailles: twelve hundred rooms around four courtyards, with a kilometre-long axis of water running through the park. He never saw it finished, dying in 1773 and leaving his son Carlo to complete the work. The legend that has fastened onto the house says the architect never left it. Custodians describe a presence moving through the closed wings and a light rustle of steps over cold marble, as though someone were still walking and inspecting. In the corridors people speak of a lady in white at full moon, and the district also tells of the witch and the poisoned rose that killed the fisherman's daughter Rosella, loved by a prince whose family would not have her. Beneath the palace kilometres of passages are said to run, never fully mapped.
