Countess Matelda, who sent her lovers to die in a booby-trapped passage and was walled up alive herself, is said to haunt Poppi's castle.

The castle of the Guidi counts towers over the Casentino valley and ranks among Tuscany's best-preserved medieval strongholds. Legend tells of the beautiful Countess Matelda, who took young lovers while her husband was away at war – and at dawn sent them out through a "secret passage" that was in fact a dark pit lined with blades. When the local men vanished one by one she was exposed, and a furious mob dragged her up the tower, where she was walled up alive. To this day many claim to see a woman in white at the castle windows at night, and paranormal societies have carried out several investigations at the site.
