Fumone Castle crowns a hilltop in the Ciociaria region south of Rome and long served as a papal prison. In the 19th century the three-year-old heir Francesco Longhi died here, according to legend slowly poisoned by his seven sisters, who feared he would inherit everything. His grief-stricken mother had the body embalmed - it still rests in a glass case inside the castle - and is herself said to wander the rooms at night, rocking her child. Visitors report children's laughter, light footsteps and a female figure in the corridors.
