The White Lady thrown from the cliff turned to stone as she fell - her rock is still visible by the old castle.

Duino Castle balances on a cliff above the Adriatic near Trieste, next to the ruin of the older fortress. Legend has it that a cruel lord hurled his beautiful wife from the cliff edge; as she fell toward the sea she raised her eyes to heaven with a desperate scream, and the gods took pity, turning her to stone just before she reached the water. The whitish rock known as the 'Dama Bianca' is still pointed out at the shoreline, and on moonlit nights her spirit is said to wander the ruin. The castle, where Rilke began his Duino Elegies, is open to visitors.
