Solveig of Miklibær was refused holy ground in 1778 – eight years later the priest vanished without trace, and folk said she had dragged him into her grave.

Miklibær is a church farm and parsonage in the Blönduhlíð district of Skagafjörður, tied to one of Iceland's darkest ghost legends. The servant woman Solveig took her own life in 1778 out of unrequited love for the priest Oddur Gíslason and, as a suicide, was denied burial in consecrated ground. Her revenant, Miklabæjar-Solveig, was then said to haunt the parsonage – and when Oddur vanished without trace on his way home one dark evening in October 1786, word spread that Solveig had pulled him, in some versions horse and all, down into her grave. A letter from 1789 reveals that his body had been found in a stream below the farm and secretly buried, but by then the legend had taken on a life of its own, later inspiring Einar Benediktsson's famous poem about the disappearance.
