In the middle of the Danube in Budapest lies Margaret Island, with the ruins of the Dominican convent where King Béla IV sent his daughter Margaret in the 13th century; she lived and died here in strict asceticism. The island was later ravaged by Tatars and Turks, and the nuns were scattered forever. City legend holds that a nun's figure still appears by the ruins at dusk – curiously in the company of a hussar or soldier, which has spawned tales of a forbidden love behind the convent walls. The island is now Budapest's leafy retreat, but around the ruins the Middle Ages linger.
