A light burned in the cliff across the ravine, night after night. When the man finally climbed up, the icon lay there in a hollow of the rock.

In the gorge of Fyli, where the rock walls close so tightly around the valley that the monastery came to be called "of the enclosed", stands one of Attica's oldest monastic houses. Its founding rests on a vision. Tradition says a pious man saw a strange light in the cliff opposite the monastery, recurring and unexplained; when he finally climbed up he found in a small hollow of the rock the icon of Panagia Eleousa, known ever since as Amaranto Rodo, the unwithering rose. The icon is held to be miracle-working and the hollow in the cliff is still shown to visitors. Inscriptions in the monastery reach back to 1204. The gorge is steep, silent and shaded even at midday.
