Above Votsalakia beach in Kastella stands the ruined mansion of the Mavromichalis family. After the war it housed merchant-marine schools, but since 1955 it has stood empty, and Piraeus has filled the vacancy with legends. The most repeated concerns a young servant girl killed inside the house in Ottoman times; she is said to appear at the shoreline below in a nightgown, always at dusk, always alone. The second concerns shadows moving between the wings of the building and across the empty window frames, and voices heard from the garden above when nobody is there. The mansion is one of Piraeus's most photographed ruins and the one the city stubbornly calls "the haunted house of Kastella".
