In Breton belief, the peat bogs near Brennilis concealed the very gateway to hell.

Yeun Elez is a vast stretch of moorland and peat bog in the Monts d'Arrée, in the heart of Finistère, and in Breton folklore its quaking mire, the Youdig, was the entrance to the underworld. Restless spirits were brought here by priests: after an exorcism the revenant was turned into a black dog and driven down into the bog to be returned to the realm of the dead. This was also the domain of the Ankou, death's scythe-bearing servant, whose creaking cart was said to herald the next death in the parish. Marked trails circle the bog today — best walked at dusk, if you dare.
