An old man in a black coat invited him home to a concert. The next day it turned out nobody had lived in the flat for fifty years.

Among Parisian wandering legends, the one about the concert at the Luxembourg gardens is the most persistent. A young man who used to sit listening to the music in the park was addressed one evening by an elderly gentleman in a long black coat, who invited him home to a private concert in his flat on the rue de Vaugirard. The evening was enchanting: candles, strings, a full room, applause. Only the next day did the young man realise he had left his lighter behind. He went back and was met by a concierge who explained that the flat had stood empty for fifty years. The stairwell was thick with dust and the door nailed shut. Versions of the story have been told in Paris since the 19th century, and the park's evening visitors still know not to accept invitations they did not ask for.
