Edgar Allan Poe lived in Greenwich Village for several short periods, and at 85 West 3rd Street, around 1844, he is said to have written parts of The Raven.

The original house was demolished, but when the university built anew on the site, parts of the old house were preserved, among them a staircase, inside the new building, a decision that drew heavy criticism from preservationists.

Poe has no real ghost here. His hauntings belong rather to the grave in Baltimore. But the shadow of the raven lies so heavily over the neighbourhood that several walks include the stop anyway, more literary than paranormal. Stand here and think of the man behind the horror: Poe lived in poverty in these alleys while his young wife slowly died of tuberculosis.
