In the brick abbey of Chorin walked the white 'key-keeper' with her great bunch of keys – until a worker laughed at her slippers and she vanished forever.

The Gothic brick abbey of Chorin in the Barnim region is one of northern Germany's most beautiful monastic ruins – and long had its own ghost. The White Lady of Chorin was called the 'Uutgebersche', the dispenser, because she always carried a great bunch of keys at her belt. A night watchman at the abbey brewery first saw her on the malting floor, and when more witnesses gathered they noticed something odd: beneath the white robes she wore coloured slippers, yellow by some accounts, green by others. When one of the workers laughed aloud and called out about the gaudy slippers, the figure fled – and according to the legend was never seen again. The tale was recorded in 1843 in the collection Märkische Sagen und Märchen.
