Kašperk, built by Charles IV in 1356 to protect the gold mines and the trade route through the Bohemian Forest, is the highest-lying royal castle in Bohemia. The surrounding forests have always teemed with beings in local folklore, and the castle's two best-known ghosts are the misshapen old crone Swiza and Šplhavec, the Climber, a figure said to scale the courtyard walls in the dark. Hikers camping nearby have told of drifting lights, voices, footsteps and a sudden icy wind. The legends make this remote castle a favourite destination for ghost enthusiasts.
