The castle of Jindřichův Hradec, one of the largest in Bohemia, is where the White Lady legend takes its gentlest form. Here Perchta of Rožmberk is said to have cared for servants and the poor, and according to legend she made the lords of the castle promise to serve sweet porridge – the sladká kaše – to the town's poor every year, a tradition that genuinely persisted for centuries. Her white figure reportedly appears in windows and corridors, mild but solemn, keys at her belt. If she appears wearing black gloves, it is still read as an omen of grief.
