Outside Tongyuan Gate, the only land route out of old Chongqing, lay the city's pauper burial ground for centuries, and the old street rhymes state flatly that Qixinggang is haunted. When roads were cut through the area in the 1920s, thousands of graves were dug up, and a ghost panic swept the city: wailing voices at night, will-o'-the-wisps drifting over the slope, and porters refusing the stretch after dark. To settle the homeless spirits, the Bodhi Vajra Pagoda was raised beside the gate in the 1930s — it still stands today amid the bustle of the metropolis, a peace treaty with the dead.
