On the third floor of the Manaus opera house lingers a European soprano who never got to sing her opening night.

The rubber barons' lavish opera house opened in 1896 in the middle of the Amazon jungle, with European chandeliers and a dome of gilded tiles. By the theatre's most persistent legend, the house is haunted by a European soprano engaged for a full season but barred from the stage on opening night – who never left the building. Over the years staff have reported sudden cold, laughter and voices from empty corridors, and objects moving on their own. The third floor is singled out as the most haunted part of the house.
