In the miniature castle in central Porto Alegre, a jealous politician kept his young mistress prisoner on the third floor – her weeping is still said to be heard behind the Gothic windows.

The Castelinho do Alto da Bronze is a bizarre sight in central Porto Alegre: a miniature medieval castle with towers, battlements and Gothic windows, built as late as 1948. The politician Carlos Eurico Gomes had it erected for his eighteen-year-old mistress – who, according to the story, was kept a prisoner on the third floor, forbidden to come downstairs or even approach the windows, until she fled after a death threat years later. Her account became the book "The Prisoner of the Castelinho". On the city's ghost walks it is said that weeping and a woman's figure at the windows can still be sensed at night in what is now a cultural centre.
