On the lonely road over the Wienerberg stood a mill that, after its honest owners died, was bought by the robber knight Kilian von Drachenfels. He let the wheels turn now and then so people would believe a real miller lived there, and opened an inn in the mill so that carters and messengers could be robbed and murdered in their sleep. His wife begged him again and again to give up the robber's life. At last he dragged her to the mill well and threw her down. In that instant the earth shook, a vast hole opened, and the knight and all his men plunged screaming into the depths. The mill has stood empty since, and every night at twelve they must haul sacks and grind under the devil's whip — until the woman is lifted from the well and buried in the ground.
