By the road from Vienna to Baden there stood at Siebenhirten an old abandoned mill that decayed a little more each year. Nobody in the surrounding villages dared go near it, for it was said to be haunted at night. At a court feast the story came up, and the duke sent the young knight Reinprecht von Wallsee to find out what was true. Reinprecht rode out with his squire and a few servants and laughed at a wayfarer who warned him at the roadside: the spirits should only tell him their favourite colour. He kept watch in the milling room, but the wine sent him to sleep. Next morning his men stared at his helmet. The white plume had turned coal black overnight. The answer had been given without anyone hearing a sound.
