Down in Heiligenstadt everyone knew the Leopoldsberg was haunted. From the upper windows of the ruined and abandoned castle the villagers saw lights, and not merely standing lights: they were carried from room to room as if by servants still walking their rounds. The moment the clock struck twelve at night the whole vision vanished at once. Shepherds lying with their animals nearby heard, at the same hour, a rumbling and clattering up on the hill. Others claimed that the rich abbey library at Klosterneuburg held secret manuscripts about the matter, which for certain reasons were never allowed to surface. And at noon, it was said, dwarfs appeared on the mountain instead, in very great numbers.
