The narrow lane between Singerstraße and Domgasse carries a name Vienna has never scrubbed off. According to the legend that long held sway in the city, every Templar in Vienna was cut down here when the order was suppressed, and the blood ran in streams down towards Singerstraße. In the cellars of the Fähnrichhof, where the knights are said to have fled from the swords, bloodied Templar figures have shown themselves to those who went down with a light — and the order's hidden treasure is said to lie there still. Historically the name cannot be traced to any bloodbath, but the tale has clung for centuries and made the alley 'a place of horror and dread'. Mozart's Vienna flat stands a stone's throw away in Domgasse.
