On the Jägerwiese above Sievering, on the slope of the Hermannskogel, lies the Agnes or Maidens' Spring. The Viennese made their way there on Sundays and feast days, but above all at midsummer, on Good Friday and at Epiphany. The best hours to come were noon and midnight. Some spent the night in the woods with a blessed candle in hand, and when they tired they drew a circle in consecrated chalk on the ground and lay down inside it — the ring was to protect them from the spirits that dwelt thereabouts. People gathered around a fortune teller to learn how to behave when Agnes or Karl appeared. Pictures hung from the trees by the spring, and visitors stared into the water for lottery numbers in the silt. Below the spring, it was whispered, a green gate opens to a crystal palace.
