In the Cemetery of the Nameless by the Danube the unknown drowned were buried – and in the fog their figures are said to return.

In the harbour district of Albern in Vienna's eleventh district lies one of Europe's strangest burial grounds: the Cemetery of the Nameless. From the mid-19th century, the unidentified dead washed ashore by the Danube's eddies were buried here – suicides, accident victims and the murdered whom no one missed or recognised. Simple iron crosses inscribed 'Namenlos' still stand in the sandy ground near the riverbank. On misty nights, veil-like figures are said to move among the crosses, as if the drowned were still searching for their names, and to this day fishermen set a wreath-bearing raft adrift on the river each year in memory of the dead.
