The house at 112 Ocean Avenue is a large Dutch Colonial Revival home in a residential neighbourhood in Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island, New York. On 13 November 1974, 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family in the house.
In December 1975 George and Kathy Lutz moved in with Kathy's three children, but left after twenty-eight days, claiming they had been terrorised by paranormal phenomena. Jay Anson's novel is said to be based on those events but has been the subject of considerable controversy. The murders genuinely took place, but there is no evidence that the house is or ever was haunted.
Amityville is the setting for Jay Anson's book The Amityville Horror, published in 1977 and adapted into a series of films beginning in 1979. The book and the films made the address one of the world's best-known haunted houses.
The house at 112 Ocean Avenue still stands, but it has been renovated and the address changed to discourage the curious from visiting. The distinctive quarter-round windows have been removed, and the building today looks considerably different from its film version.
