Historical background

Vang prestegård was built in 1780 on foundations thought to date from the 1200s. These walls may have belonged to an older church, and it has been suggested that they were used as a prison during the Inquisition, where people met tragic ends through starvation.

One of its most notable residents was the parish priest Abraham Pihl, who lived on the property between 1789 and 1821. Pihl was a man of many talents — clockmaker, astronomer and architect — but he was also surrounded by rumour. According to contemporary accounts he had access to the svartebok, a collection of magical writings, and his successes were said to be the result of a pact with dark powers.

Reported phenomena

The paranormal accounts from Vang prestegård are numerous and varied. Among the most persistent are sightings of Abraham Pihl's apparition. He is said to appear in the cellar, where the temperature drops suddenly and a mist-like figure emerges from the wall. Several visitors have described an eerie sense of being watched in these spaces.

Upstairs, in one of the guest rooms, doors have been seen opening by themselves. The doorway moves as though someone were trying to get in, but looking out reveals no one there. These events have left many guests with a strong sense of unease.

History and mystery

Vang prestegård is today part of Toneheim folk high school and is used mainly for teaching. Although it serves a modern function, the old accounts remain and add to the site's distinctive atmosphere. The combination of historical and supernatural elements makes Vang prestegård a compelling place to explore — for anyone interested in history, and for anyone drawn to the unknown.
