One of Sweden's best-preserved medieval stone houses, built in the 16th century by the wealthy merchant Mårten Nilsson "Skinnare". In 1519 he was granted land by the abbey to found a hospital for the poor, pilgrims and the sick. Here Vadstena's 600-year history of care began — a history that ended in the madhouse cells next door. Documented; a quiet, reflective stop.
