The Wilderness Road Museum

Newbern, in Pulaski County, Virginia, sits on the old Wilderness Road, and an unusual amount of the original village is still standing.

The museum occupies one of those buildings, and it is where most of the accounts come from. A woman has been seen inside it.

The road itself is the reason this place exists. The Wilderness Road was the route through the Appalachians into Kentucky, opened up in the 1770s, and hundreds of thousands of people walked or rode west along it in the decades that followed. Newbern was a stopping place, with an inn, a tavern and a store.

Everybody going west came past here, which is a particular kind of history for a village to hold: almost nobody who came through intended to stay.

The museum is open to visitors and the village can be walked.
