White Hall

White Hall at Richmond, Kentucky was the home of Cassius M Clay, the Civil War era emancipationist, and it is now a state historic site with staff and guided tours. The presences described here include Clay himself, one of his daughters, one of his sons, and a Black servant.

The sighting most often repeated places Clay at the top middle window, the nursery, passing back and forth in front of it. The interpretation offered is that he is waiting for his former wife and his children to come back.

An update from June 2005 carries something better than the usual anonymous report: the curator's own assessment. The curator considers it possible that a daughter and a son are present, since a number of incidents describe a woman and a small boy. On the presence of a baby the curator is more definite. On two separate occasions, in two different seasons, tour guides have heard a baby laughing in the house.

It is unusual for the professional staff of a historic site to go on record at all, which is what makes White Hall worth taking seriously.
