Hogback Road in Mercer County, Pennsylvania is one of those roads where snow is cleared from half of it and not from the rest. The uncleared stretch is winding, half gravel and half tarmac, and unpleasant to drive at any time of year.

Down in a gully along that stretch is an old wooden bridge crossing Hogback Run.

What has been said for years is that a group of devil worshippers sacrificed a young woman there.

Claims of that kind attached themselves to isolated roads across the United States during the satanic panic of the 1980s, and essentially none of them survived being checked against police records. No such killing appears here either.

What the road genuinely has is the thing that makes people willing to believe it: a bad surface, a gully, a wooden bridge and no reason for anyone to be down there.
