The Green Lady

The Green Lady is reported in the wooded gulch around Wahiawa on Oahu, and she was first described by children at the local school, some time in the 1940s or 1950s.

They described green scaly skin like a fish, hair like seaweed, sharp teeth, and a face that was badly wrong.

She is one of the best known figures in modern Hawaiian folklore and every child in this part of the island grows up with her.

The story usually given is that she was a mother who lost a child in the gulch and has been looking ever since, which places her in the same family as a great many water figures worldwide.

What is worth noting is where it started. This is not an adult legend passed down to children. It came from the children themselves, out of a specific school, in a specific decade, and the adults picked it up from them.

The gulch is steep, wet and genuinely dangerous.
