Near the Undercliff institution at Meriden, Connecticut stood a sanatorium for sick children, running from the early 1900s into the 1930s and 1940s.

The diseases it took in were the ordinary ones of childhood before vaccination: rubella, mumps, measles and worse. Most of the children brought there were not expected to leave.

That sentence is the whole of this entry and it does not need improving. Before the middle of the twentieth century, contagious childhood illness killed on a scale that is now hard to picture, and isolation hospitals existed to keep the sick away from everyone else rather than to cure them.

The old brick building still stands beside the institution, and it is what local residents describe.
