This building in York, Maine served as the town hall in the colonial period, and the story attached to it is that the head of the village had a young woman hanged in front of it, accused of witchcraft.

No execution for witchcraft ever took place in Maine. The panics that produced hangings were in Massachusetts, and York's actual colonial catastrophe was different and worse: in 1692, the same year as the Salem trials, the village was destroyed in a raid and around a hundred people were killed or taken captive.

So the town does have a mass casualty event from that exact year, and the story that survives is about a witch.
